Choosing the Right Rug

Q. When in the decorating process do you choose a rug and how do you find the right one?

A. In design school, designers are taught to begin decorating a room with the rug. This makes practical sense because your choice of colors will be far broader in upholstery, drapery, and, of course, paint colors. Choosing to buy a custom rug is beneficial because it allows you to work with a planned color palette. If you opt not to buy a custom rug, you may have problems later trying to incorporate all the colors in the rug you choose, which will likely have a group of colors that will work with almost every color in your palette and one very wrong color that will make you want to avoid the rug altogether. It is also possible you may find the perfect rug, yet it is a different quality or price point than your other furnishings. Your best bet in finding the right rug is to do some smart shopping. Check out all the available options to try to find the perfect fit. After shopping all the stores in your area, you might be forced to make a compromise that could be very frustrating. Internet shopping is also an option, but colors on a computer screen are hard to see and may not be an accurate representation of the actual colors. Furthermore, if you take a chance and the colors are not right, you’d have to re-wrap and pay freight back to the supplier. Finding the right rug is usually trial and error; you might have to go through all this a couple of times! Although it’s not always possible to begin an interior design totally fresh in real life, beginning the design process with a rug truly does simplify your challenge later.
